Prior to the 1932-33 formation of the current Rhode Island Interscholastic League schools played an independent schedule against other amateur teams

In some years the media voted on the "state champion" at season's end, while in others championship finals were staged

An eight team Rhode Island high school league named the Rhode Island Interscholastic Athletic League was formed in 1918:

In 1928 the Rhode Island Interscholastic Athletic Conference was formed with 14 schools:

The earliest known Girls Tennis tournament was the 1969 Singles Tournament

In 1970-71 Girls Volleyball was added and Golf became a co-ed sport, with an individual Girls Golf champion being crowned for the first time

In the 1971-72 season, the following Girls sports were initiated:

  • Girls Cross Country (Official dual meet seasons began in 1976)
  • Field Hockey
  • Girls Basketball (although unofficial league(s) likely existed prior)
  • Gymnastics
  • Girls Outdoor Track (Official dual meet seasons began in 1974)

In 1973 team champions were first crowned in Girls Tennis

Girls Soccer was added in 1983

Fast-Pitch Softball was added in 1986

Boys Volleyball was added in 1987

Girls Indoor Track was added in the 1990-91 Season

Swimming became a co-ed sport in the 1991-92 season with the first all-girls postseason. In 2000-01, the Swimming league was separated into a Boys Swimming individual sport and a Girls Swimming individual sport from a match/standings perspective

Boys Lacrosse and Girls Lacrosse were added 2001

Girls Ice Hockey was added in 2002-03

Cheerleading (Competition) was added in 2007-08

Unified Basketball (Unites Special Olympic athletes---individuals with intellectual disabilities---and partners--individuals without intellectual disabilities---as teammates in co-ed competition) was added in 2010

Unified Volleyball (Unites Special Olympic athletes---individuals with intellectual disabilities---and partners--individuals without intellectual disabilities---as teammates in co-ed competition) was added in 2010

Cheerleading (Game Day) was added in 2021 (Spring)
